Senior Producer: triple j - Australia

For 10+ years, I worked within the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Sydney, Melbourne and my hometown of Sale in the Gippsland region. Starting as one of the first online producers in 2001, I stepped into all the challenges of live radio production & presentation eventually leaving the ABC in 2014 as Senior Producer of triple j, Australia’s best youth network, leading their Melbourne audio teams.

Here’s an overview of my work history with ABC & triple j, starting with my most recent position as Senior Producer.

A content manager "dynamo"! As Senior Producer with talk and music based radio experience & leadership in ABC Local Radio and triple j. Well known for unquestionable, unlimited on air & behind the scenes support, and a thorough commitment to the radio audience, through strategy development and research.

Experienced and elegant professional in all work situations, with a diverse and adaptable range of communications skills. An irreplaceable team player and leader, working under extreme deadlines and differing working environments, with a constant care free outlook throughout the working day.

A creative ability to manage small or large projects with an enthusiastic eye on the changing media landscape. Professional and friendly networker, with adaptability of presence across audience, industry and interested parties.

triple j, Senior Producer Melbourne - July 2010 to September 2014

  • Supervised triple j Melbourne staff, organising workflow between the triple j offices, with staff meetings & open communication.

  • Produced a diverse range of triple j programs, with adaptability and the Melbourne and national audience as key.

  • Provided feedback and airchecked presenters & producer, supporting new colleagues and developing new talent.

  • Took Facilitation Training, Leadership Workshops and Innovative Group Discussions, while updating technical skills in audio production & photography workshops

  • Worked with triple j Manager, ABC Audience Research & the Group Program Director to develop a strategy paper for  triple j, on the station’s direction in Melbourne.

  • Created external industry relationships, working with marketing and program teams to host successful Melbourne based events like breakfast outside broadcasts, several J Awards and Good Az Friday's Comedy Broadcasts.

  • Communicating and working across ABC Radio & TV networks with Victorian radio & tv staff, in all areas to increase triple j's presence and commitment to the audience.

While in this role, triple j has seen the most successful Melbourne Survey Results since the station went national in the 1990s. My onground presence in the Southbank building created a new awareness and enthusiasm towards triple j internally & externally, and a new positive approach to program making has spread across triple j in Melbourne, with a new open channel of communication between Sydney & Melbourne offices.

The triple j brand has grown with additional streaming channels triple j unearthed and Double J, and throughout my last year these new digital radio stations are attracting & constantly building new audiences. This role is now very much the ‘Team Leader’ across the triple j channels, radio & digital/online, for Melbourne, and as an 'above & beyond' leader with a 'can do' attitude, my commitment to triple j & ABC was unquestionable.

triple j, Morning & Afternoon Program Producer - February 2006 to June 2010

  • Daily produced radio and online news content for triple j's morning & afternoon programs, built and maintained audiences across these platforms.

  • Developed astute and trusting radio relationships with broadcasters, built a network of contacts throughout the media/music/youth industry and, best of all, daily contact with triple j audience via booth producing, and social media interfaces.

  • Worked within smaller program teams and across ABC departments, and in larger working groups through triple j tv, and the triple j Live Music Team, with excellent communication skills and over eagerness.

  • A+

Starting as triple j’s Afternoon Producer, I was quickly promoted to breakfast producer, becoming the most dependable senior producer at the station. My work in this role contributed to and helped triple j be the station it is today, with ratings in almost all capital cities the highest in over a decade.

I had a huge commitment to the station, the audience, to new music and engaging content (via radio and online). My daily program producing became the modern way of producing at triple j, setting a high standard for young producers. Constantly finding new ways to connect & interact with audiences, and juggling diverse content and storytellers, triple j throughout my time daily producing shows steadily increased the highest ratings in all states.

774 ABC Melbourne, Drive Producer - 2005 to 2006

  • Invited to join the metro drive time program, under Local Radio’s ‘development opportunities’ for regional staff.

  • Worked within a larger team of broadcasters on the sophisticated news and sports focussed Drive Program with Lindy Burns, as well as Senior Produced the same program nationally over the Summer period across ABC Local Radio networks.

  • Keen understanding of Melbourne and contributed to more 'contemporary' stories, tapping into the stations aim for a younger demographic, while working across emergency broadcasting procedures.

ABC Gippsland, Breakfast & Online Producer, 2001 - 2005

  • Produced & presented radio & online content and successfully gained a larger listening audience

  • Created a platform for interactivity and helped the station become the number one new source of news and emergency broadcaster in the region.

  • In my final year at ABC Gippsland, I managed the 3 Outside Broadcast events to celebrate 70 years of radio in Gippsland and was nominated for ABC Local Radio’s Awards across several categories.

In this role, I became the highly motivated, multi-skilled program maker I am today. Described as enthusiastic, my daily duties included producing stories for the Breakfast Program and ABC Gippsland Online, working solo and within the team. Eager for any task, I have reported or created packages from theatre performances, racing cars, the soggy racing track, op shops and more. Also became the “fill in” presenter and a well known identity in the Gippsland community.
